Who was Saartjie Baartman?

Who she was and why her history matters to Blocktober

Adapted from the original article published on 27 Oct 2025 by Dr Jo-Anne Duggan, Heritage Consultant.

Sara “Saartjie” Baartman (c. 1789–1815) was a Khoekhoe woman from the Eastern Cape who was taken to Europe in 1810 and exhibited there as a racialised spectacle. Her body was treated as an object of public curiosity and, after her death in Paris, parts of her remains were kept and displayed in a museum.

An unusually sensitive portrait of Saartjie Baartman

Her remains were repatriated to South Africa in 2002 and she was buried at Hankey in the Eastern Cape on 9 August 2002.

Today her story is remembered as a stark example of the exploitation and objectification of an African woman. The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children adopted her name in honour of her memory and as a symbol of dignity and resilience.

Her story therefore has particular meaning for Blocktober through its close partnership with the Centre, and it also gives meaning to the name of this blog, Steps for Saartjie — each step reflecting solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence and support for the Centre’s work.

For the full 2025 reflection on her life by Dr Jo-Anne Duggan, read The violence is in the viewing.

Blocktober swims

Swim activities 2026

See the full programme of Blocktober 2026 activities – walks, runs, rides and swims, in Cape Town and elsewhere. Add your name to the Activity  Roster for the days you plan to join.

Swimming is one of the ways you can take part in Blocktober 2026 – our October movement of solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence. The core 2026 Blocktober swims will mostly take place at the Camps Bay (CB) tidal pool, although swims anywhere can count if you record them on Strava (see more below).

Every October, people walk, run, ride and swim as part of Blocktober: to show solidarity, raise awareness about GBV and support fundraising for the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children and the expansion of economic empowerment opportunities for survivors.

If this is your first introduction to Blocktober, read What is Blocktober?

Join our swims

Please join our swims. Add your name to the
Swim tab on the 2026 Activity  Roster for the days you plan to join. This helps us see who is joining, coordinate the group, and know who to look out for when we do a quick roll-call before starting the swim.

Please join and check the Swim WhatsApp group for details and any changes. I’ll usually post the plan the day before, but may need to change it on the day if the weather changes unexpectedly. I normally check the webcams first.

Camps Bay Pool Mural
Where do we meet?

  • Camps Bay tidal pool: Meet at the mural next to the pool. You can’t miss it – as you face the tidal pool, it is on your left;
  • Clifton 4th Beach: Meet at the bottom of the steps to 4th Beach, near the women’s toilets and showers. Take the steps from the middle section of the car park;
  • Camps Bay beach: Meet at the rocks on the left-hand side of the beach as you face the sea.

How long do we swim?

Swimming has been part of Blocktober since its early years, including daily 31-minute swims. In 2026 we are making the swims more accessible, while keeping the idea of 31 – representing the 31 days of October.

However, for these cold Atlantic swims, we will aim to swim for any length of time between 31 seconds to 31 minutes. Your choose the main point is to join in.

Record your swim on Strava

If you want to do individual swims (i.e. swims that do not fall within these specific organised activities), please record your swims on Strava, and join the Blocktober Swim Club. This helps us capture the collective Blocktober swims.

New to Strava, or not sure how to make your activity count? See how to use Strava for Blocktober.

11. What should I check after each activity?
12. How do I appoint a delegate?
13. How do I deactivate a delegate?
14. How do I change the WhatsApp link for my activities?
15. What conditions and privacy arrangements should I explain?
16. How do Strava and the Progress tab fit in?
17. What should I do if something goes wrong or I need help?

1. What is my role as an activity lead or delegate?

Activity leads keep their activities up to date on the Blocktober 2026 roster, coordinate participation and record who actually takes part for the safety of participants. Delegates help with these tasks on behalf of an activity lead.

The main roster tasks are to add or update activities, communicate changes, complete roll-call and check the information used to report our collective Blocktober effort.

If there is more than one actitivy lead for your sport, or if you or other such leads have appointed delegates, please agree who will update each session so that the lead and delegate do not duplicate or contradict one another’s changes.

2. How do I get editing access to the roster?

Activity leads and delegates must sign in with the Google account recorded for their editing access. Being able to add a name as an ordinary participant does not require activity-lead permissions.

The Roster is built on Google Sheets, a Google produce similar to a MS Excel sheet, but in  sheet shared with others.

Your account is recorded under Google account email (editing) on the Activity Leads tab (scroll to that tab at the bottom of your screen). Active delegates also have access for the sport of the activity lead selected under Delegated for.

If you are a new activity lead, contact blocktober2025@gmail.com with your name, sport and the Google account email you will use. An existing activity lead can appoint a delegate as explained in question 12 below.

When using more than one Google account, check that the roster is open under the correct account.

3. Can I manage the roster on my phone?

Yes. For guidance on how to use the roster on your phone, see Using the roster on your phone.

Key steps are the following:

  • On a phone, swipe up to see activities further down the sheet and left to reveal columns to the right. To use a drop-down, tap the cell and then the arrow ▼. To follow a link, tap the cell and then the link that appears.
  • After entering information, tap ✓ to finish editing and bring the sheet tabs back into view.
  • Before changing the content of a cell in the roster, check that you are still on the correct activity’s row. This is particularly important when moving across the sheet between activity details and participants’ names.

4. Which parts of the roster may I edit?

Activity leads and active delegates have activity-editing and roll-call access for their authorised sport: Walk, Run, Cycle or Swim. A delegate’s access is not limited to “Did it?”

On the relevant sport tab, the editable activity fields include the date, starting time, route or location, activity lead, status, additional activity details and roll-call entries.

These are sport-level permissions, not permissions restricted to one session. Change only the activities you are responsible for, or changes agreed with the relevant lead.

Delegate appointments and an activity lead’s WhatsApp settings are managed on the Activity Leads tab. Delegates should ask their lead to make those changes rather than treating their sport-editing access as permission to administer other people’s roles.

Please leave headings, formulae, automatic counts and system fields alone. Do not insert or delete spreadsheet rows or columns, or rearrange the sheet’s layout. Overview and Progress display information; they are not where you enter activity details.

5. How do I add a new activity?

Work on the relevant Walk, Run, Cycle or Swim tab—not on Overview.

  • Find the unused, preformatted activity row below the existing activities. Do not overwrite an existing session or use either row marked Do not use this row;

  • Enter the Date in the format DD/MM (ie two digits for day / two digits for month), Time in the format hh:mm (ie two digits for hour on 24 hour basis : two digits for minutes), and Route / location. Use a clear description that identifies the activity and meeting point;

  • Select the responsible person from the Activity lead drop-down and check that Status / cancel is Planned;

  • Use More → to enter the additional details described in question 6, then check the activity on Overview.

For example, enter a starting time as 16:30, rather than simply “4.30”.

The day, links and calculated fields are supplied by the roster. Do not type over them or copy a whole existing row, which could also copy its participants and attendance records.

The roster sorts activities by date and time. After an edit, check where your activity appears before entering further information; do not rely on its previous row number.

If no suitable empty activity row is available, or if you found an error or need advice, contact roster support via blocktober2025@gmail.com.

6. How do I enter distance, duration and other activity details?

On the activity’s row, click or tap More → in the Activity info column. This takes you to More details on the same sport tab.

Complete the fields relevant to the activity:

  • Distance km: enter the distance in kilometres, for example 7.5 (you can use up to 3 decimals);

  • Duration hh:mm: enter the duration in hours and minutes, for example 02:30 for two hours and thirty minutes. This is the activity’s duration, not its starting time;

  • Elevation gain m: enter the elevation gained in metres, for example 300;

  • Blockhouse?: select Y or N to indicate whether it is a King’s Blockhouse ascent.

These are the fields provided in the roster’s More details section.

Use ← Back on the same activity’s row to return to its main details.

Before the activity, enter the planned details where known. Afterwards, check whether they need correcting to reflect what took place. Do not invent a figure merely to fill an empty cell.

7. How do I change or cancel an activity?

Find the existing session on its sport tab and update the relevant details. Do not create a second entry merely to correct its time or route.

The Status / cancel field is in column J. Use:

  • Planned for an upcoming activity;

  • Done once the activity has taken place;

  • Cancel when it will not take place.

Cancel an activity by changing its status, not by deleting its row.

Communicate changes to the date, starting time, meeting point or cancellation through the relevant WhatsApp group as well. Do not assume everyone who added their name will notice a spreadsheet edit.

If an organised group has already registered for the session, ask its organiser to check the corresponding Group Roster entry after changes to the date or activity details.

8. How do I complete “Did it?” and roll-call on sports tabs?

On the sport tab, find the correct activity and move across its row to the participant names. Look for Names Start Here ↓.

Each Name cell has a neighbouring Did it? cell. Use that cell’s drop-down to select Y for someone who participated or N for someone who did not.

Check attendance at the start (as a roll-call, for safety to to ensure you can account for every actual participant) and finalise the record at the end of the activity. Do not mark everyone Y simply because their names were entered beforehand.

“Did it?” records individual participation; “Done” records that the session took place. They are separate entries.

Leave unused Name and Did it? pairs blank. Ordinary participants do not complete the protected roll-call cells themselves.

9. How do I handle withdrawals, no-shows and people who have not signed up?

Withdrawals before the activity: participants may remove their names before the session and should also let the activity lead know, but do not assume that they will do so.

No-shows: if a name is still listed but the person did not attend, retain the name and mark Did it? = N. Do not delete names after the activity merely because those people did not participate.

People who arrive without signing up: add each person to an empty yellow Name cell and record their participation. Use one person per cell, with the name or alias they normally use on the roster.

Before adding someone individually, check whether they are already included in an organised group’s headcount (see 10 below).

If there are no empty Name cells, contact roster support via blocktober2025@gmail.com rather than overwriting another participant or inserting more columns.

10. How do I record organised groups?

An organised group, such as a Saartjie Baartman Centre group, can be recorded by headcount rather than by entering every participant’s name.

First check that the group appears on Group Details. Its details need to be entered only once.

For each session it joins, use a separate entry on Group Roster. Complete Date → Activity → Group / unit → Participants, choosing the date first.

The Participants figure is the expected headcount before the activity. Afterwards, the group organiser should correct that same figure to the actual headcount, including 0 if nobody from the group attended.

Check this with the group organiser before finalising the session. Take care not to count the same people both in the group total and as individual participants.

11. What should I check after each activity?

  • Individual attendance: complete Did it? for the names entered and add anyone who participated without signing up beforehand;

  • Group attendance: confirm that group headcounts have been corrected to actual attendance, without duplicating individual entries;

  • Activity details: check the distance, duration, elevation gain and Blockhouse entry, where relevant;

  • Session status: set Status / cancel to Done.

Completing only one of these tasks can leave the record incomplete. For example, marking a session Done does not identify which individuals participated.

12. How do I appoint a delegate?

An authorised activity lead can appoint a delegate.

Open the Activity Leads tab and click or tap Go to Delegates ↓ near the top. This moves you to the Delegates section lower down on the same tab.

  • Enter the person’s name in an available Delegate name cell;

  • Under Delegated for, select the activity lead for whom the person will act;

  • Enter the delegate’s Google account email (editing);

  • Set Active? in column L to Y.

The delegate’s delegate number (#), sport and role fill automatically. The roster grants activity-editing and roll-call access for the selected activity lead’s sport. Please do not type over the automatic fields.

Ask the delegate to sign in with the recorded Google account and check their access before they need to use it for an activity.

Public mobile and email contact details are optional. They are separate from the Google account email needed for editing access.

13. How do I deactivate a delegate?

On Activity Leads, use Go to Delegates ↓ and find the person’s delegation entry.

Change Active? in column L to N ("no"). Use this control rather than deleting the spreadsheet row.

Let the delegate know that the arrangement has ended and confirm who will take over any outstanding activity updates or roll-call.

If the person’s access does not appear to reflect the change, contact roster support via blocktober2025@gmail.com.

14. How do I change the WhatsApp link for my activities?

As an activity lead, open Activity Leads and find your own row in the Activity Leads section—not in Delegates.

Update Default WhatsApp in column I and WhatsApp joining link in column J. The first is the label people see, such as General or Time Trial; the second is the group’s joining link.

Changes there feed through automatically to activity rows that name you as their activity lead. Do not replace the WhatsApp formula separately on each activity row.

The default is the general Blocktober WhatsApp group.

Use a dedicated Whatsapp group if you think that will work best.

After changing the link, test it from one of your activity rows. Remember that the change affects the activities linked to your name, not just the session you are currently looking at.

Delegates should ask their activity lead to change these settings.

15. What conditions and privacy arrangements should I explain?

Direct participants to the Conditions for Blocktober activities. Adding a name confirms acceptance, and group organisers should make the conditions known to their groups.

Explain that participants are encouraged to use a consistent nickname or alias. The roster is shared with anyone who has its link, so information entered in it should not be treated as confidential.

Public contact details are optional and should be included only with consent. The Google account email used to assign editing permissions is also recorded on the shared Activity Leads tab.

16. How do Strava and the Progress tab fit in?

Strava users are encouraged to still enter their name on the roster when planning to join an organised activity. The Roster is firstly a tool to record when people PLAN to join, which Strava does not do.

Include Strava users in the roll-call even when they also record the activity on Strava.

Encourage participants to use a consistent roster name and, where useful, add their Strava-matching details under Roster Names. This helps the reporting team match records and avoid double-counting when we compile stats later.

The Progress tab brings together participation and activity measures. Strava figures are added in reconciled updates, rather than immediately after each activity, and the figures remain provisional while records are checked.

Your contribution is to keep the session details, individual attendance and group headcounts accurate. Do not edit the Progress totals directly.

17. What should I do if something goes wrong or I need help?

If you cannot edit a cell, first check that you are signed in with the Google account recorded for your role and are working on the correct sport tab. A delegate should also ask their activity lead to check Delegated for, the email address and Active?.

Some cells contain formulae or are reserved for the administration of the Roster. A protected-cell message does not necessarily mean your activity-editing access is broken.

For phone controls, see Using the roster on your phone.

For other problems, email blocktober2025@gmail.com. Give your name, your sport, the relevant activity’s date and time, and the tab and cell or row involved. Explain what you were trying to do and what happened.

If you changed something accidentally, write an email on what was changed rather than trying to repair formulae or rearrange the sheet yourself. A screenshot can help.

If a participant has difficulty adding their name, they can email the same address, giving their name, the activity they plan to join—walk, run, cycle or swim—and its date and starting time.

18. What should I do if I am still stuck?

1. What is the roster for?

The Blocktober 2026 activity roster is the shared list of organised Blocktober walks, runs, rides and swims during October. It lets you see what is happening, choose an activity, add your name, see how many people are joining and find the relevant WhatsApp group for updates.

It is our shared programme of organised walks, runs, rides and swims.

Start on Overview, which brings the activities together in date order. It shows the sports, starting times, activities or routes, the number recorded as planning to join or having joined, and a Join link for you. You do not add your name on Overview itself. To join an activity, click on Join.

For more details on how to join the roster, see below : 4. How do I find an activity and note that I plan to join it?

Adding your name to the roster helps activity leads plan ahead, coordinate participation and support group safety. Recording who actually takes part also helps us show the collective effort behind Blocktober.

2. Can I use the roster on my phone?

Yes. Please first read Using the roster on your phone.

That page explains opening the roster in Google Sheets or a browser, Google’s app and sign-in prompts, using drop-down lists and links, and bringing the sheet tabs back after entering information. These phone controls matter throughout the roster, not only when you first open it.

The questions below explain what to do once the roster is open.

3. Do I need to sign in to Google?

There is no separate Blocktober account to create. The roster’s sharing settings allow anyone with the link to use the participant-entry cells without signing in to Google.
Nevertheless, we recommend signing in to Google when editing the roster, whether on a computer or a phone. On a phone, Google may also prompt you to open or install the Google Sheets app and sign in. This is about using Google Sheets, not registering with Blocktober.

4. How do I find an activity record that I aim to join it?

  • On Overview, choose the activity you would like to join and click or tap Join. On a phone swipe UP to see more activities;

  • Follow the link to the relevant Walk, Run, Cycle or Swim tab. Check the date, time and activity, and note the row number of that activity;

  • Move right along that same row to the first empty yellow Name cell. On a phone, swipe LEFT to reveal the columns to the right. Look for Names Start Here ↓, then continue past any names already entered;

  • Enter your name, nickname or alias. On a phone, tap ✓ in the left top corner when you have finished editing.

Clicking Join does not, by itself, register you. You still need to enter your name.

Put the name of one person in each Name cell, and do not overwrite someone else’s entry. Leave the neighbouring Did it? cell for the activity lead, which is done at the start or end of an actual activity.

If you have difficulty adding your name, email blocktober2025@gmail.com, giving your name, the activity you plan to join (walk, run, cycle or swim), and its date and starting time.

By adding your name, you confirm that you have read and accept the Conditions for Blocktober activities.

5. What do the different cell colours and links mean?

Yellow cells are places for typing information. Light-green cells contain drop-down choices. Light-blue cells are links, such as Join, WhatsApp, More help and Conditions.

On a phone, a link may need three taps: first tap the cell, then tap the link that appears. For a drop-down, tap the cell and then the arrow ▼. Then you may need to tap ✓ in the left top corner

Colour does not override editing permissions. Some input cells are reserved for activity leads or other authorised users.

6. Where can I find the distance, duration and other activity details?

On the sport tab (eg Walk, Run, Cycle or Swim on the bottom of the screen), find your activity and click or tap More → in the Activity info column.

This takes you to the additional details on the same tab: distance, duration, elevation gain and whether the activity is a Blockhouse ascent, where those details have been entered.

Use ← Back on that activity’s row to return to its main details.

7. How do I get WhatsApp updates?

Use the WhatsApp link on your activity’s row in the sport tab for updates and feedback.

Most activities use the general Blocktober WhatsApp group. Some use a dedicated group, such as the time trial on Tuesdays. The link on the activity’s row directs you to the relevant group.

Check WhatsApp before setting off for changes, practical arrangements and coordination. Adding your name to the roster does not automatically join you to a WhatsApp group.

8. Which parts of the roster may I add to?

As an individual participant, add or correct your own name in the appropriate yellow Name cell. You may also complete your optional entry on Roster Names, where you can check whether other participants have a similar name to yours.

Group organisers (such as the Saartjie Baartman group) use the intended input cells on Group Details and Group Roster.

Please do not change other people’s entries, activity details, or insert and delete spreadsheet rows or columns.

A protected-cell message may simply mean that the cell is reserved for an activity lead or administrator. If there is no empty Name cell, or Join displays Full, contact the activity lead rather than overwriting an entry. Alternatively, send an email to blocktober2025@gmail.com.

As indicated, Overview is a display page, not an entry page.

9. What happens if I cannot attend, or join without adding my name beforehand?

If you decide before the activity that you will not attend, you may remove your name from that activity’s row. Please also let the activity lead know.

After the activity, do not delete your name. The lead will record that you did not take part.

If you join without having entered your name, make yourself known to the activity lead so that your participation can be recorded.

10. Who completes “Did it?”, and why?

The activity lead or an authorised delegate completes the Did it? cell beside each name: Y for someone who participated and N for someone who did not.

Ordinary participants do not complete these cells themselves.

This distinguishes people who intended to join from those who actually participated. It supports roll-call and the participation figures; simply putting your name down is not a record of having completed the activity.

11. Should I use the same name each time?

Image of part of the roster - click the link on the left
Yes. Use the same name, nickname or alias every time you participate. Add an initial or another distinguishing detail if someone else uses the same name.

You can also add yourself once on the optional Roster Names tab. There you can enter your roster name, your Strava name if different, and whether you belong to a Blocktober Strava Club.

This helps us recognise repeat participants and match records without double-counting. An entry on Roster Names does not sign you up for individual activities: add your name to each session you intend to join.

12. What conditions and privacy arrangements apply?

Please read the Conditions for Blocktober activities before joining. Adding your name confirms acceptance. Group organisers must make the conditions known to their groups.

The roster is shared with anyone who has its link, so information entered in it should not be treated as confidential. You may use an alias rather than your full name.

Public contact details on the group and activity-lead pages are optional and should be included only with consent. A Google account email is, however, needed to assign an activity lead’s or delegate’s editing access.

13. How do I register an organised group?

An organised group can record a headcount instead of listing every participant individually.

  • First check Group Details. Add the group or operational unit once if it is not already listed;

  • Open Group Roster and use an empty entry row;

  • Complete the row from left to right: Date → Activity → Group / unit → Participants. Choose the date first, because the activity list depends on it;

  • Enter the expected headcount before the activity, then correct that same figure to the actual headcount afterwards.

Use a separate Group Roster entry whenever the group joins another session, but do not create a new Group Details entry each time.

Coordinate with the activity lead so that the same people are not counted both in the group total and as individual entries for that session.

14. Do I need Strava, and should Strava users still use the roster?

Strava is optional. You can participate in Blocktober without it. However using Strava and joining a Blocktober Strava Club is particularly valuable for your individual Blocktober activities in Octover, i.e. those not forming part of an organised group.

If you use Strava, we encourage you to join the appropriate Blocktober Strava Club and follow the Strava guide.

Strava users should still add their names when joining an organised roster activity. The roster tells the activity lead who intends to come; a Strava record serves a different purpose by recording the activity itself.

Using a consistent roster name and completing the optional Strava-matching details on Roster Names helps us reconcile the records.

15. How do I record my own activities outside the organised roster?

You can also take part through your own walks, runs, rides, swims or local equivalents.

If an activity is recorded on Strava and you belong to the relevant Blocktober Strava Club, it can be counted through Strava and does not need to be submitted again through the own-activity form. We encourage you to join a Blocktober Strava Club so these activities can be noted as part of your Blocktober effort.

For activities not counted through a Blocktober Strava Club, a short recording form is being prepared. The form link will be added here when it is ready.

Do not add a completed personal activity to a sport tab as though it were an organised session for others to join.

16. Where can I see our collective Blocktober progress?

Open the Progress tab.

It brings together measures such as participation, distance, elevation gain, time and Blockhouse ascents. It also shows patterns of repeat participation. It will only show numbers from 1 October, since it does not record planned participation.

Strava figures are added in reconciled updates, rather than appearing immediately after each activity. Figures remain provisional while records are checked and combined.

17. Help for activity leads

Activity leads and their delegates: please see the separate Help for activity leads for guidance on editing access, adding, changing or cancelling activities, completing roll-call, appointing delegates and updating WhatsApp links.

18. What should I do if I am still stuck?

For phone controls, first check Using the roster on your phone.

If you have difficulty adding your name, email blocktober2025@gmail.com, giving your name, the activity you plan to join (walk, run, cycle or swim), and its date and starting time.

For help with a particular activity, contact its activity lead through the linked WhatsApp group. For a general roster problem, ask in the general Blocktober WhatsApp group.

Explain which tab and activity you were using, whether you were on a phone or computer, and what happened. A screenshot can help, but avoid sharing other people’s personal information unnecessarily.

Quick iPhone phone guide

Using the Blocktober roster on an iPhone

Using an Android phone? Tap here.

The Blocktober Activity Roster is a Google Sheet. On an iPhone, it works best in the free Google Sheets app.

If Google asks you to download or install the Google Sheets app, or to sign in to a Google account, follow its prompts.

For help on the Roster that you cant find in this guide, tap More help.

1. Open the roster

Tap this link to the Blocktober Activity Roster.

If your phone asks whether to open the file in Google Sheets, choose Open. If it asks you to Sign In, then sign in to your Google account.

The roster should open on the Overview tab. Swipe up to see more activities and left to see more columns. If it opens on another tab, swipe along the tabs at the bottom and tap Overview.

2. Using the light-blue links

Light-blue cells are links.

For links to webpages such as iPhone help, Joining WhatsApp groups, More help, the Blocktober Blog or the Conditions:

  • Tap the light-blue cell once. The blue link appears at the bottom of the screen;
  • Tap the blue link at the bottom of the screen to open it;
  • If you have selected the dark display setting for your phone, these cells appear black with light-blue text.

3. Join an activity

On the Overview tab, find the activity you want and tap Join in the last column.

On an iPhone, the Join link works differently from the webpage links above:

  • Tap the Join cell once. A long formula may appear at the bottom of the screen — ignore it;
  • Tap the Join cell a second time. The options Open link / Copy / Comment should appear;
  • Tap Open link.

This will take you to the correct activity row on the Walk, Run, Cycle or Swim tab.

4. Add your name

Tapping Join on the Overview tab should take you directly to the correct activity row on the Walk, Run, Cycle or Swim tab. If you did not use Join, or it did not take you there, swipe along the tabs at the bottom to the relevant sport tab and find your activity.

On the relevant Walk, Run, Cycle or Swim tab, identify the activity you want to join and on that row swipe left until you reach the first blank yellow Name cell:

  • Tap the yellow cell;
  • The fx Enter text of formula line opens at the bottom of the screen, above the formatting options;
  • In the Enter text of formula line, enter your name, nickname or alias, then tap ✓ on the right of your text. For more about which name to use, read More help;
  • Tap ✓ again in the top-left corner to save it and show the sheet tabs again;

Conditions for Blocktober activities

Taking part with care and respect

Blocktober is a voluntary community initiative. These conditions apply to organised Blocktober walks, runs, rides and swims, and to participation recorded through the Blocktober roster.

These conditions are intended to help Blocktober activities remain safe, respectful and practical. Blocktober depends on people looking out for one another, exercising reasonable judgement and helping to create the solidarity and connection at the heart of the movement. They do not replace ordinary common sense.

By adding your name to an organised activity on the roster, or by taking part in an organised Blocktober activity, you confirm that you have read and accept these conditions. A group organiser who adds a group to the roster confirms that these conditions will be made known to the people participating with that group.

Participate within your abilities

Please take part only if you are reasonably satisfied that you are fit and well enough for the activity you have chosen. Bring appropriate clothing, footwear or equipment, water and anything else you reasonably need for the activity.

If you have a health or fitness concern that may affect your participation, use your own judgement and, where appropriate, seek medical advice before taking part.

Outdoor activities and safety

Walking, running, cycling and swimming involve the ordinary risks associated with outdoor physical activity. These may include changing weather, uneven or slippery surfaces, traffic, mountain conditions and, for swimming, conditions in and around the water.

Blocktober organisers and Activity Leads will take reasonable care in planning and coordinating organised activities, but they cannot remove all of these risks or provide professional guiding, medical or rescue services. Participants remain responsible for exercising reasonable judgement about their own safety and circumstances.

For Table Mountain activities in particular, participants are encouraged to stay with the group. One of the reasons for using the roster is to help people participate together rather than unnecessarily walking alone. This reflects the practical group-safety approach used in previous Blocktober activities.

Follow the activity arrangements

Please follow reasonable directions from the Activity Lead about the route, pace, regrouping, weather or safety changes and the conduct of the activity.

Routes, times or activities may be changed or cancelled if circumstances require it. If you decide to leave an organised group or turn back, please tell the Activity Lead or another designated person so that the group knows you are no longer with them. If you need assistance to turn back, please tell them and they will try to arrange appropriate support.

Participants must also comply with applicable rules of the place where the activity takes place and with lawful instructions from park, land or facility authorities. The regulations applicable to national parks, for example, require visitors to act safely and comply with management rules and lawful instructions.

Respect for others

Blocktober is intended to be a welcoming and respectful space. Please treat other participants with consideration and respect.

Particular care should be taken to respect the dignity and privacy of survivors of gender-based violence. Nobody should be pressured to discuss personal experiences, and personal stories or identifying information should not be shared further without that person’s consent.

Photographs and social media

Photographs are part of the way Blocktober records and shares the month, but privacy must be respected.

For solidarity activities involving survivors, Blocktober’s general practice is not to share identifiable photographs: pictures are usually taken from behind or framed so that individuals cannot be recognised. For other Blocktober activities, identifiable photographs may be shared, but please make sure that those pictured are comfortable with this, and respect any request not to be photographed or not to have a photograph shared.

Roster information and privacy

The roster is used for activity coordination, group safety and Blocktober participation statistics.

You may use a nickname or alias if you prefer. Please use the same name or alias consistently so that the roster can support roll-call and group safety, and so that participation can be tracked reasonably accurately to show Blocktober’s reach and impact.

Information recorded in the roster may also be used to produce anonymous Blocktober statistics, such as participation levels, active days, distance and time, to help assess and communicate Blocktober’s reach and impact. Personal information should not be copied or used for unrelated purposes.

Children and young participants

A participant under 18 should normally take part with a parent, guardian or other responsible adult, unless different arrangements have been made for a particular organised group.

If circumstances change

An Activity Lead may change, shorten or cancel an organised activity if conditions make that sensible. An Activity Lead may also ask a participant to stop or turn back if there is a reasonable safety concern.

In an emergency, everyone should prioritise immediate safety and obtain appropriate emergency assistance rather than relying on Blocktober organisers or Activity Leads to provide a rescue or medical service.

Whatsapp

Which Blocktober WhatsApp group should I join?

Different Blocktober activities use different WhatsApp groups for updates, changes and
coordination.

You only need to join the groups relevant to the activities you take part in.

You may also click the link on the roster

If you are unsure which group applies to the specific activities you are joining, go to the Blocktober 2026 Activity Roster, then find your chosen activity on the Walk, Run, Cycle or Swim tab and tap the WhatsApp link on that row. It will take you to the group linked to that activity.

Note that joining an activity on the roster does not add you to a WhatsApp group. To join the WhatApp group you need to tap the WhatsApp link next to your chosen activity - for updates and coordination with others taking part in that activity.

Before setting off, check the group for any last-minute changes to the time, meeting point or other arrangements.

Quick phone guide

Using the Blocktober roster on a phone

The Blocktober Activity Roster is a Google Sheet. On a phone, it works best in the free Google Sheets app.

2. Using the light-blue links at the top

Light-blue cells are links.

For links to webpages such as Android help, Joining WhatsApp groups, More help, the Blocktober Blog or the Conditions,

  • Tap the light-blue cell once, then tap the blue link that appears at the bottom of the screen.
  • Alternatively, "Open / Copy / Comment" may appear next to the text you tapped. Tap on Open.
  • If you have selected the dark display setting for your phone, these cells may appear black with light-blue text.

3. Join an activity

On the Overview tab, find the activity you want and tap Join in the last column.

On an Android phone: When you tap Join in the last column, a link appears next to the selected cell; tap it. If other options appear, tap Follow link. Ignore any formula that may appear at the bottom of the screen.

On an iPhone: When you tap Join in the last colum, a formula may appear at the bottom of the screen — ignore it. Tap Join a second time, then tap Open link when the options Open link / Copy / Comment appear.

Tapping the link will take you to an activity row on the Walk, Run, Cycle or Swim tab.

4. Add your name

If you did not use the overview tab, swipe along the tabs at the bottom to the relevant sport tab, tap on it.

On the relevant Walk, Run, Cycle or Swim tab, identify the activity you want to join and on that row swipe left until you reach the first blank yellow Name cell:

  • Tap the yellow cell.
  • The fx Enter text of formula line opens at the bottom of the screen, above the formatting options.
  • In the Enter text of formula line, enter your name, nickname or alias, then tap ✓ on the right of your text. For more about which name to use, read More help.
  • Tap ✓ again in the top-left corner to save it and show the sheet tabs again.
  • When trying to enter your name, the number keyboard may appear first. To switch to the alphabet keyboard, tap the ABC button at the top right of the formula bar.

Adding your name means you accept the Conditions for Blocktober activities.

To withdraw from an activity, return to the same sheet and row and delete your name from the yellow Name cell.

Colours to remember

Yellow = Name cells you can edit.

Light-blue = links.

Orange = activity / route information — it is not a link.
